BREAKING THE CLASS CEILING
“THE TRUTH IS, IT’S AN INDUSTRY THAT’S POSH.”
With ever-increasing scrutiny of the social make-up of our media organisations, Edinburgh TV Festival hosted a special debate with ITN and ScreenSkills that explored the class ceiling and the ways in which the industry can break it down.
What Can Organisations do to break the Class Ceiling?
Measure and monitor socio-economic background of staff
Publish data on socio-economic backgrounds of all staff, senior leaders (even internal class pay gap)
Commission research to identify your own, firm-specific, barriers to progression
Take intersectionality seriously
Identify a senior leader to champion socio-economic diversity
Formalise the informal (in terms of work allocation employee sponsorship and performance management)
Start a conversation about talent
Ban unpaid and unadvertised internships
Lobby for socio-economic background to become a protected characteristic!
